Volunteer story – Julie at Leicestershire LGBTQ Centre

Julie’s involvement with the Leicestershire LGBTQ Centre spans decades. She first volunteered in the early 1990s, a challenging time when Section 28 legislation banned teaching about LGBTQ+ issues in schools.

After retiring, Julie chose to return to the Centre in January 2024, this time as a Trustee. This shows her lasting dedication to the Centre’s mission.

Since her return, Julie has been very active. She’s been involved in:

  • Pride events
  • LGBTQ+ history month
  • Writing for the newsletter
  • Fundraising
  • Attending board meetings

TThe Leicestershire LGBTQ Centre has served the community since 1976. Working with the team, Julie aims to create transformative, sustainable services that empower every LGBTQ+ individual to thrive and build an inclusive society. Her unique experience, from both the past and present, helps greatly with this important goal.

Julie’s story highlights the power of long-term volunteering and the significant impact individuals can have on community organisations. Her return as a Trustee demonstrates a deep commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for all LGBTQ+ individuals in Leicester and Leicestershire.
