The Lutterworth & District Branch of Leukaemia Research was started in 1971 to raise funds through raffles, jumble sales, and coffee mornings. The Branch activities steadily increased, along with funds raised each year. In 1999 the Branch raised £14,000 mostly through Jumble sales, but now with other added activities such as the Blue Peter bike rides and indoor car boot sales. The donations of clothes, shoes, bric-a-brac, toys, small furniture, records and tapes were dropped off by the public at houses belonging to any of the current branch committee members. These donations would often build up to unmanageable sized piles in between the various Jumble sales.
Obviously sorting and grading these donations was also becoming a problem due to the sheer volumes involved. Over the years the charity has changed its name from Leukaemia Research to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, Blood Wise and now Blood Cancer UK.
In 1999 Chris Ingham and Mo Shearsby we given the chance of a six week pop up shop and between us all we have not looked back and are going from strength to strength. Now 26 years later we have two independent charity shops and a warehouse, run by managers and an army of volunteers who work on set mornings or afternoons. We are a fun loving group who enjoy the community spirt of volunteering and also the social side with pub quizzes etc.
But we now find ourselves in need of volunteers to help up stairs in the clothes shops, downstairs in both shops behind the counter and helping on the delivery van. So if you think you would like to join us please get in touch.
For helping on the van you will need to be fit and able, you will need to pick up one end of a sofa or wardrobe and carry to the customers house or out to the van etc. But we need your help!!
