Lions Clubs International is the largest service organisation in the world with nearly 1.5 million members in 150 countries. Our Rutland club was founded in 1975 and currently has 25 members involved in a range of community service activities. Major service activities include the legendary escorting of Santa around Oakham, Uppingham and several Rutland’s villages. Until recently we ran the major fireworks display along with a number of other fundraising activities.
Currently we continue to support the Late Night Pharmacy with a ‘Meet & Greet’ service during the vaccination programmes and we will shortly be looking after the grassed area around the Queen Elizabeth II statue next to Oakham Library. During the most recent Lion year we made 30 donations to various causes within Rutland, including VAR, Rutland Scouts & Guides, Young Carers, Rutland Foodbank, Blood Bikes, Rainbows Hospice and The Out of Hours Club.
Alongside all these service activities, we have a social life as well, meeting once or twice a month to enjoy time together, maybe a meal, or a walk or a bowls evening, shortly a treasure hunt in Stamford. If you are looking for a role volunteering, then there is no better opportunity than to join our Santa Tableau, we are always looking for new elves, possibly drivers of the Ford Reindeer or even to fill the role of Santa for a couple of evenings. This year Santa will make his first appearance at the Oaklham Christmas lights switch on, on Sunday 22nd November
Albeit, membership of our Lions club is an ongoing opportunity, we are always looking for volunteers to get involved with our Santa programme
